Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Malaysia Face Risks

daajis.com:-The UN Refugee Agency UNHCR is worried about the number of recognized refugees that are behind bars in Malaysia.

The UNHCR is concerned because most of the arrested refugee persons are recognized refugees under the UNHCR mandate. Yante Ismail is an officer at the overseas relations department of the UNHCR. She told the media that the asylum seekers and refugees in Malaysia face many risks. Those refugees thus include Somalis. Most of the refugees in Malaysia are from Somalia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Their number is currently 150,000.

Spokesperson for Malaysian Immigration Department said those refugees can only stay with a permit from the Malaysian Government. He however said even when arrested, UNHCR will be asked to confirm the legitimacy of the papers of those arrested and will be released if their documents are genuine.
