Somali woman fined for illegal stay in Kenya

daajis.com:- A Mandera court has fined a 21-year-old Somalia national sh150,000 or serve two years imprisonment for being in the country illegally.

Nurta Hassan Khalif was found at Bula Jamhuria in Mandera town on Tuesday without a valid passport or permit.

She faced a second count before Mandera Senior Resident Magistrate Peter Areri of cruelty to a child contrary to the Children’s Act.

Ms Khalif pleaded guilty to first account but denied the second offence.

In the second count, she is charged with leaving her three-day-old baby at a dumpsite unattended.

Mr Areri convicted Ms Khalif in the first count on her own plea of guilty and set January 30 as a hearing date for the second count.
Ms Khalif said she crossed into Kenya to save her life from the cruelty meted on locals by Al-Shabaab in her home country.

The magistrate ruled that the accused be repatriated to Somalia upon completion of jail sentence.
