Dundalk soldier killed in attack on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon

daajis.com:- Eight Defence Forces personnel came under attack as they travelled to Beirut

A soldier from Dundalk has been killed and a second soldier seriously injured in an attack in Lebanon. 

Private Seán Rooney (23) was among eight Irish soldiers who were travelling to Beirut in convoy of two Armoured Utility Vehicles when they came under small arms fire just after 9pm last night Irish time. Private Shane Kearney (22) from Cork was critically injured.

Four soldiers were rushed to Raee Hospital near Sidon. 

One was pronounced dead on arrival. A second soldier was rushed to surgery and is now in a critical serious condition. 



The two others were treated for minor injuries, while the other four Irish soldiers were not injured and are safe and accounted for. 

Private Rooney joined the Defence Forces in March 2019 and his home unit is the 27 Infantry Battalion in Dundalk. He previously served overseas with the 119 Infantry Battalion UNIFIL.
